Michael Bay Finally Made an Art Movie
Critical consensus on Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is overwhelmingly negative. But the critics are wrong. Michael Bay used a squillion dollars and a hundred supercomputers' worth of CG for a brilliant art movie about the illusory nature of plot.

Oh, and I would warn you that there'll be spoilers in this review — except that, really, since I still have no idea what actually happened in this movie, I'm not sure how much I can spoil it.

Since the days of Un Chien Andalou and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, filmmakers have reached beyond meaning. But with this summer's biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari's cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I'm still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.

Transformers: ROTF has mostly gotten pretty hideous reviews, but that's because people don't understand that this isn't a movie, in the conventional sense. It's an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.

And the true genius of Transformers: ROTF is that Bay has put all of this excess of imagery and random ideas at the service of the most pandering movie genre there is: the summer movie. ROTF is like twenty summer movies, with unrelated storylines, smushed together into one crazy whole. You try in vain to understand how the pieces fit, you stare into the cracks between the narrative strands, until the cracks become chasms and the chasms become an abyss into which you stare until it looks deep into your own soul, and then you go insane. You. Do. Not. Leave. The Cabinet.

15th-Jun-2009 12:37 pm - Star Wars Faux Pas
BTP Yuki
I have accidentally made a terrible mistake in Geek Parenting.

My son has played through LEGO STAR WARS on the Wii, and has become familiar with the story that way. I have not shown him the actual movies (in the correct 4-5-6-1-2-3 order) yet. So now when he actually DOES see the movies, he'll probably expect the stormtroopers to explode into little LEGO bricks when shot.

Flog me later, but I must get the movies on DVD now.

MY QUESTION:
I swore that I would never buy the SPECIAL EDITION DVDs for the Original Trilogy. Are the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL cuts of the Original Trilogy available? I know everyone on my F-List must know this, so I'll brace my InBox for responses...

Holy crap. What a visual.
21st-May-2009 05:53 pm - Master of my Domain
BTP Yuki
I've got a problem. I've maintained SiriusGraphics.com since I was in college (gosh... 14 years ago?). It was my name for my fictional Graphic & Web Design business. Over the years, I've actually done only a few paying jobs in that area, and mainly used it as my blog. Of late, I find that I'm not using the blog quite so much anymore, and I don't see myself doing this kind of work very much in the future, since it's so time-consuming, and that's one thing I have less and less of lately.

There is a legitimate business in Athens, GA called "Sirius Graphics" that actually does this stuff professionally, run by a woman named Rachel. Because I took SiriusGraphics.com, she had to take SiriusGraph.com, and occasionally I get her mail, and I forward it on to her. She tells me if I ever want to sell the domain to her, to give her a call.

I'm thinking of doing just that. She has a legitimate business to run, and I have a mostly-defunct blog and a couple of websites that I designed for friends. I think I will hand over SiriusGraphics.com to her. It's a bit sad, but I think it's the right thing to do at this point. Everyone still can write to me at my email address, but I will hand over the web site domain.

SO the question is... What should my NEW domain name be? Help me brainstorm some ideas.
Early thoughts:
-PackhorseProductions.com - my fictional video company for my YouTube vids
- SuburbanOtaku.com - you Anime fans might get this. Only problem: hard to spell if you don't know it
What are your thoughts? (And before you suggest it, Wade... JohnArbuckle.com is already taken. )

I don't often have much to say here. So, like Silent Bob is thought to be prophetic when he actually DOES open his mouth, I thought I'd share something I discovered that has changed my little world.

When your'e making a sandwich, spread mustard on the bread and then toast it Juuuuust a little bit.  That will bake it into the bread just right and smells just fantastic.

Little things like that can change your whole day if you let it.

16th-Apr-2009 08:34 am - Project: Gankutsuou Alternate Cover
BTP Yuki
I own loads of anime DVDs, most of them for have 6 or more discs. I wanted to save some space on the shelf, so I bought a few bulk multi-disc cases and started making my own DVD Covers for my Animes. Here, I've cast Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo as a classic hardback book.

Anime,Gankutsuou,DVD,Monte Cristo

(Here's the Book scan I used as a starting point.) I plan on doing this for all my collections eventually, but this is the one that gave me the inspiration. I haven't done anything like this in a while, so any comments/critiques are appreciated.

For your Holy Week Enjoyment:

LOL - Zombie Jesus

A little something I put together this morning. I always did think the line in the Apostles Creed about "We look for the resurrection of the dead" was a bit suspect. I mean, if your average churchgoer actually WITNESSED resurrection from the dead, they'd probably crap themselves and get the shotgun.

And also a surprisingly well done vid: "Jesus Christ - Supercop"

I stumbled across this Short Film and I think everyone should see it. TJ Thyne is such an endearing character on BONES, and he is no different here. A great fable about Free Parking and smiles. I know 13 minutes is a lot to ask of an attention span, but it's worth it.
